The Trail is located in the Chilterns, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. At an elevation of approx. 250m (820 feet) it commands views
over the surrounding countryside for miles around. Planted by the Forestry Commission between 1957 and 1966,
Cowleaze Wood
in now managed by Forest Enterprise and grows a mixed crop of conifer and deciduous trees with a carpet of
bluebells
that make spring a particularly good time to visit.
When visiting the Trail, in keeping with the
forest code,
please don't pick any flowers - leave them to be enjoyed by others.

Although it is a commercial woodland,
felling & planting exclusion zones exist around many of the sculptures so that they can be enjoyed as the artist envisaged.
The additional benefit of creating stable parts of the wood is the enhanced flora and fauna of these areas.
From April to September the Norway spruce trees of the
Chiltern hills
are home to Europe's smallest bird, the
Firecrest, and the
Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve
which spans and overlooks the M40 is only a short walk from the Trail.

Frequent nature walks in the area are organised by
English Nature.
These are usually free and can feature fungi, orchids, rare butterflies & red kites, plus bats, badgers, foxes & deer.
Telephone the Site Manager on 01844 351833 for more details and a timetable of future walks.
