Some caching terms explained:
- (Minus) used to denote something removed from a cache.
+ (Plus) used to denote an item left in a cache. More often used overseas.
35mm - A Micro Cache made from a film pot.
528ft/161m - Usual minimum distance allowed between physical stages ofcache/s.
Additional Waypoint - Parking, or other co-ords helpful to cachers/Reviewers.
ALR - Additional Logging Requirement, such as taking a photo.
Ammo Can or Box - A popular Geocache container.
Bagged a Trig - Visited a trigpoint too.
Bagging - Damp/spoilable cache items put in a watertight bag.
Bookmark - Personal (themed?) List of caches. FTFs, island caches etc.
BYOP - Bring Your Own Pen. Because there isn't one in the cache for you to use.
Cache - Short for Geocache.
Cache & Dash - A quick, easy-to-do geocache, ideal for caching in a hurry.
Cache Cam or Camera - A disposable camera left in a cache for finders to use.
Cache Con - An area of high Cache Concentration. See also Cluster.
Cache Hound - A dog along for the walk. Lots of other names on this theme.
Cache Note (or Notice) - Information left in a cache for Muggles. See Stash Note.
Cacher - Also known as a Geocacher. One who caches!
Cacher's Trail - Crushed undergrowth leading to the cache location. Useful.
Calling Card - A card left in a cache as proof of a visit. Unpopular with some.
Camoflage - A special effort made to hide the cache; fake leaves, camo bag...
CITO - Cache In Trash Out. Picking up rubbish and litter while caching.
CITO Event - A type of event with litter collection or area regeneration themes.
Cluster - A dense collection of caches in one area. Good for the numbers.
CNS - Short for Could Not Search, perhaps because of muggles.
Coin - See GeoCoin.
Co-ords or coords - See below.
Co-ordinates - The location of a target in Degrees and Decimal Minutes.
Datum - The 'spheroid' used (there are several, but caching uses WGS84).
Decon - Army surplus Decontamination Box, used as a small green cache.
DNF - Did Not Find, meaning the cacher couldn't locate this cache.
DNL - Did Not Look. Usually posted in a note, same as a CNS.
Earth Cache - A geology-based virtual cache with educational value.
Event Cache - Local cachers designate a time and place to meet/talk caching.
F-FTF - A 'rite of passage' for any cacher. Their 'First FTF'.
FTF - First To Find, meaning this cacher has defiled this virgin cache!
GC Number - See Waypoint.
GE - Google Earth. A handy tool to see where caches are, from orbit!
Geocache - The object you're looking for. Often a small box.
GeoCoin - Like a TB, but in the form of a coin, often with its own icon.
GeoLitter or GeoTrash - A cache left in place after the listing's been archived. Tut.
Got a Lock - See Satellite Lock.
GPS - Short for Global Positioning System. It uses satellites!
GPS handset - A device which gives your position to within a few feet.
GPSr - GPS receiver. See GPS handset.
Groundspeak - The American business which runs Geocaching.com.
Grandfathered Cache - Old cache types, like Web Cam & Virtual.
GZ - Short for 'Ground Zero', meaning the area your GPS takes you.
Hitchhiker - A Travel Bug, GeoCoin or similar Trackable Item.
Icon - Different cache and coin types have their own; some folk 'collect' them.
ICT - Short for Ivy Covered Tree, a popular cache hiding spot.
In: - Item left in a cache, often as a swap. See also Out, if you need to...
INATN! - Short for It's Not About The Numbers!, a common caching phrase.
L - Short for Left. An item left in the cache.
Letterbox Hybrid - A cache with a stamp in it, often found via clues not co-ords.
LNTN - See TNLN. ;-)
Lock - See Satellite Lock.
Logbook or Logsheet - Book in the cache to log your visit in.
Lunch Box - A plastic container used as a cache container. S/o Ammo Can.
McTat - Derogatory term for low-quality/value cache contents.
Mega Event - A 'super meeting' of 500+ cachers. Has own Icon.
Micro Cache - A tiny geocache, big enough for a logbook but very little else.
Mystery Cache - A puzzle or unusual cache which fits no other type of cache.
Muggle - A non-geocacher. Also sometimes known as a Geomuggle.
Muggled - When a cache is found and raided, damaged or removed by a Muggle.
Multi Cache - Where co-ords lead to a clue (or clues) to the actual cache location.
Nano Cache - A very small cache, typically the size of the tip of a finger; 1cc/1ml.
NEF - Short for Nice Easy Find. See also QEF.
Night Caching - Geocaching at night! Best done at a spooky location.
NINO - Nothing In, Nothing Out. See also TNLN.
No Trade - No swap made.
Numbers (wo)man - A cacher who likes to find lots, as quickly as possible.
Offset Cache - The most basic form of Multi Cache.
OPOS - Obvious Pile of Sticks/Stones. All too easy to spot the hide.
Out: - Item removed from a cache when swapping or taking a traveller. See In:
PAF - Phone A Friend, for when you can't find a cache which your friend has!
Paperless Caching - Using a fancy GPSr, Mobile or PDA to cache with 'note-free'.
Power Trail or Ring - A series of caches intended to be done in sequence.
Published - When a cache listing has been Reviewed and released to the world.
Puzzle Cache - See Mystery Cache.
QEF - Short for Quick Easy Find. See also NEF.
Reverse/Locationless Cache - Where you found an item then logged its position.
Reviewer/s - Groundspeak volunteer who review & release cache proposals.
ROT13 - The usual way of encrypting cache clues: GURR = TREE (A=N, B=O, etc.)
Sandwich Box - See Lunch Box.
Satelite Lock - When the GPSr gets enough signal to tell where it is.
SBA - Should Be Archived; a log type now called Needs Archived (bad English!)
Signal - GPS relies on radio waves, and tree cover can make accuracy poor.
Signature Item - Often home-made item a cacher regularly leaves in a cache.
SL - Signed Log.
Speed Caching - A race against the clock to find the cache box.
Spoiler - A log or photo on the cache info page which gives details away.
Stash Note - See Cache Note.
STF - Almost a FTF, but just pipped to the post! (Second To Find).
Stickoflage - Camoflage... with sticks.
Swap Item - Something taken or left at a cache, in exchange for another item.
T - Short for Took. An item removed from the cache.
T4TC - Short for Thanks For This Cache.
TB - Short for Travel Bug.
TNLN - Took Nothing, Left Nothing; made no swap at the cache.
Tracking Number - Unique number on a TB or GeoCoin used to identify/track it.
Traditional Cache - A cache where the co-ords on the cache page point to it.
TFTC - Short for Thanks For This Cache. See also T4TC.
Trackable Item - See Travel Bug and GeoCoin. A Hitch-Hiker or Traveller.
Trade Up (or Even) - Good practice, only swapping items of equal/higher value.
Travel Bug - An item which has its location logged from cache to cache.
Traveller - Item tracked from cache to cache. See Travel Bug, GeoCoin, etc.
Treasure - The contents of a cache (not used with the irony you might expect!)
TNLC - Took Nothing, Left Card (as in Calling Card)
TNLN - As above, but Left Nothing. Cache was logged but not raided.
TNLNSL - As above, but 'Signed Log', which sort of goes without saying...
Trig - Triangulation pillar. See Trigpoint.
Trigpoint - Used for surveying. Often found on hills, near caches.
Troll - A cache hidden under a bridge.
Tupperware - The 'brand name' version of a Lunch Box, often used as a cache.
Unknown Cache - See Mystery Cache.
UPOS - Unusual Pile of Sticks/Stones. See also OPOS.
Virtual Cache - A sort of 'cacheless cache', where the location is the prize.
YOSM - Ye Ole Survey Monuments, a rare 'moving cache'.
Watchlist - A saved selection of caches which mail you when they're logged.
Waypoint - The code numbers/letters given to a cache. Example: GC1E26P
Webcam Cache - Where the aim is to be photographed with your GPS.
Wherigo - A sort of super cache, using a programme on a PDA to track it down.
WGS84 - The standard Datum used for caching. It's a mapping thing.
Wooden Nickel - Sig Item popular in the USA.
